To Market in Agrigento

4/29 No plans for today so we had our caffè and brioche with our locals then headed out to the bus stop for a ride up to the old center of town. Bought another set of bus tickets and then found a store that sold sportswear. I picked up a couple of shirts to replace a couple that I brought with me.

We walked back to the apartment since it is all downhill then saw the Venerdì (Friday) outside market which is right near our apartment. On our way there, I saw a fennel plant growing out of the sidewalk and it is exactly the same as the unusual flower I saw on our way to the Valley of the Temples on 4/27. I was very happy to see I was right in identifying the first plant.

Wild fennel

When we got to the market, it was very large with a lot of clothing vendors, kitchen items, table covers, curtains, you name it. It must have covered at least ten city blocks. There was nothing here we really needed so we walked to the food area – ah, the food!

Buy anything. Clothing covered at least half a football field.
Carpet, drapery material, thread, yarn, you name it!

We saw a table that had a beautiful display of salted cod – something we don’t see in the states much anymore and only found during the Christmas holiday so this was really pleasing to the eye for me.

Baccalà

The olives, well they are everywhere and always a sight to see. Yum!

Next we ran across the butcher, who just happened to be barbecuing small chickens. Smelled heavenly and looked fabulous. We have had these before in Italy and they are delicious. So I bought one and that is tonight’s dinner along with fresh bread, olives and a salad.

Those are flames in the back of the rotisserie.

Came across another candy stand, I’ll have to pick up some candy before we head home.

The food truck was laden with different types of cheese for sale.

How about eggplant? Slightly different shapes here, large and beautiful.

Next stop flowers! The live flowers were gorgeous and in full bloom. Most of the flowers below are silk!

Since we have so many floral wreath makers, artificial vase arrangements – here ya go.

These were absolutely gorgeous and very different and I wished I could have taken a bunch of it home and the price was right! Until I got a closer look I actually thought they were real. Boy was I surprised and only wished we had an assortment like this at home and for these prices!

By this time we were ready for lunch so we went to our local caffè and had cooked vegetables which were delicious.

We ended our day with a bus ride around the area then headed back home. It was an easy and enjoyable day.

You have made us so hungry! The food looks absolutely amazing! The desserts look heavenly. The granita was my favorite. My mother would make espresso granita. I have .add it too, but never thought about pistachio granita. We miss you and can’t wait to share all these memories with us. Continue to share the blog, we are enjoying every word. Love you two.
